I’m not usually a fan of hot chocolate because I find it to be too sweet – but this recipe has certainly changed my opinion! I’m a huge fan of salted chocolate so having that in drink form sounds like a dream come true – but after trying smoked salt, I find that there’s an extra edge to the flavour, and it tastes just that little bit better. You don’t have to add the caramel but again, it adds a richness to the drink and makes it extra decadent which is perfect for this time of year. This recipe serves 2.
You will need:
Drink: 400ml milk, 6 tsp cocoa powder, 50g chopped dark chocolate, 3 tbsp tinned caramel, 1/2 tsp smoked sea salt, 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (not essential but helps to bring out the flavour).
Toppings: whipped cream, caramel sauce, smoked salt flakes, a handful of mini marshmallows.
1. In a saucepan on low heat, pour in the milk and add the chopped chocolate. Gently whisk until the chocolate has completely melted into the milk.
2. Add the caramel, cocoa powder, vanilla and smoked salt into the chocolate milk. Continue to whisk until everything is fully combined. Taste a little to check the salt level and add a little more if you prefer your drink to be more salty.
2. Pour into two mugs. Top with whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce and some more smoked salt flakes. Sprinkle some mini marshmallows for an extra colourful treat. Enjoy!
Let me know if you try making this!
